You should leave a little more room for your child to grow into the shoes.
Once you have your shoes, make sure they fit properly with the “toe-test”. (more on this later).
The right shoes will make all the difference in your child’s life. The right size will make it more comfortable for your child and help them explore the world around them.
How baby shoe sizing works
Sizes for babies are often divided by their age. You might see shoes that are 0-6 months old or 6-9 months old. These can be useful, but they should not be used as a guideline for your sizing journey. There is no one size that fits all babies’ feet.
To help you choose the right size, use age guidelines. However, it is safer to measure your child’s feet to determine what size shoes they will need.
How to Measure your Baby’s Feet
Let’s start measuring! It is possible to hold a ruler to the feet of little ones, but it may be difficult to measure them accurately, especially if they kick or curl their toes. It is also important to measure the foot standing up, as the foot may be smaller if it is under weight. This is why we have created our printable size chart!
Measure both your feet! It is not unusual for one foot to be larger than the other.
Once you have sized your baby’s feet you can now pick the right pair of shoes for them. Be aware that different brands have different sizing standards. When using sizing charts, make sure to look for the exact inch or centimeter.
How to choose the right width
Baby shoes made from rigid materials can make them too tight or too loose for your child’s feet. BirdRock Baby’s genuine leather baby moccasins are made from flexible, soft materials that can be adjusted to the feet of even the most sensitive and broadest of feet. We have heard from thousands of parents that our shoes are so comfortable for their child’s narrow or chubby feet.
How to ensure the fit is perfect
After you have tried on your new baby shoes you will want double-check to make sure that everything was perfect. These are some mom-approved ways to ensure a perfect fit.
Visual Check
You should find the baby shoes to be snug.
Toe Test
Measure from your baby’s biggest toe to the top of the shoe. Your longest toe should measure between your pinkie and your thumb at the tip of your shoe. They might trip if they are too long. If they are too short, they may become too tight (plus they will grow quickly).
It will depend on what type of shoe you are wearing, as different materials can affect this. Moccasins, which are often made from leather, will be more durable than baby boots that are softer. You want to ensure that your child’s feet are not restricted by the new shoes. They may feel tight if they do.
Width Test
At the widest point, you should be able pinch the material between your fingers. If they can’t be squeezed between your fingers at the widest point, they may be too tight. Baby moccasins, soft sole shoes such as baby moccasins, can be adjusted to fit your child’s feet. Moccs work well for babies with narrow feet or those with larger feet.
Pinkie Test
Your baby’s heel should be between your pinkie and the back of your shoe. For the best fit, your finger should be snug.
How to Avoid Common Mistakes in Shoe Size
Follow the above tips and use the size chart provided by the brand to help you choose the right size shoe for your baby. These are some “gotchas” you should avoid.
Hand-me-downs
While your child is still learning motor skills, avoid hand-me downs. Hand-me-downs will mold to the foot of the original owner, so shoes can be moulded to the foot. This can cause irritation at the feet and cause the child to walk incorrectly due to the friction.
Keep an eye on your feet
They are growing up fast and will need to size up every 3-4 months. Regular checks are recommended every two months to monitor their growth and ensure they don’t outgrow the shoes. You can set up a reminder on your smartphone to remind you to check.
Your child may start taking off their shoes, rubbing their feet or hobbling about, these are signs they have outgrown their shoes.
Get big!
After doing all the calculations, choose the larger size. It’s a good idea to give your baby a little more room for growth.
Why is it that baby shoes seem to be always too big?
We were always amazed at how big the baby shoes that we purchased when we had our first child. They were always at least one size bigger than the advertised sizes. BirdRock Baby was founded and we have learned the ropes of the shoe industry.
Many shoe companies make their shoes too large for customers who don’t know how to select the right size. They believe that although the sizing may not be correct, the child will eventually grow into the shoes so they won’t be returned by the parents.
BirdRock Baby is proud to be transparent and honest in our business. It can be frustrating to receive shoes that are not the right size. That’s why all our shoes are true-to size.
